Hi Stephanie ! loved your joke... there is still a large debate in France about this sign. It's supposed to describe (as you can guess) mental handicap, with two smiling faces speaking to each other, but being one face in the same time... freaky, isn't it ? or is it just someone smoking a curved cigarette ? :-) Anyway it was created some time ago by Adapei and promoted by the government for tourism and culture uses (at least 7 years ago) and I can testify that even for visitor services servants as I am, it still doesn't represent anything... so imagine for the rest of the world... You know how we (French people) tend to invent new signs and words. I would be curious anyway to know if a similar sign exists in other countries. A french reader of yours
Thanks so much for commenting on this! I have never seen anyone try to represent a visual handicap via icon... I think it would be considered taboo or not politically correct even to try. I really appreciate having the back story on this. Thanks for reading!
