Bathroom Blogfest 2007: Thoughtful bathrooms

Welcome back to day three of the Bathroom Blogfest. Happy Halloween!
Today I'm sharing some great features I've seen on my travels this last year. This cool sink at O'Hare Airport in Chicago provides easy access for people using wheelchairs while looking (and being) designed in. Would that all universal design was so seamless.

At the Carlsbad Outlet Mall, several features caught my eye. In every stall, they've designed a place (off the floor) to hold your shopping bags. Smart!

They also explain that the restroom has environmentally friendly features.

And provide a family restroom for privacy (especially nice for parents bringing kids of the opposite gender to the restroom).

The Oakland Museum of California offers nursing mothers a comfy couch out of the way.

And the North County Ob/Gyn office offers free feminine products, among other thoughtful features.

Tip of the day: How can you make your restroom more customer friendly? While it's great to design in these features when you build or remodel, you can also add nice touches that show you care.

Stephanie,
Great pictures! Just out of complete curiosity...do you know how the men’s restrooms in these same buildings were? Obviously you didn't go in, but I was curious to know if the men’s bathrooms carry on the same themes.
Bill,
Well, I don't know about the mens rooms. Sometimes I get my husband to go in and check them out. Several of those examples were unisex/single bathrooms (Zephyr, Cafe Gratitude, Ghirardelli). The Coast Hotel had the same fixtures on both the mens' and womens' room doors. Filoli Center was designed (the tile) so I assume the mens room was the same. The ones I would be curious about would be Shades Restaurant (did they bother to add the nice touches to the mens room?) and the de Young, which I suspect does have flower arrangements in the mens room. I will check.
I think it's fabulous how that outlet mall has a place off the floor to put one's shopping bags! That's always one of my biggest frustrations about public restrooms, and those little shelves look like an ingenious solution. Thanks for the pics!
The hand dryer may be environmentally friendly but it is a health hazard!
They work by carefully warming all the water and bacteria up to a nice temperature and then forming small droplets (aerosols) for you to breath in - the aerosols can hang suspended in the air for up to 15 minutes! So you get to breath in the leavings of other people as soon as you walk in. I will always use paper towels.
Grant,
Yes, the more I learn about regular hand dryers the more they seem like a problem. I frequently just air dry these days. I think the new Dyson hand dryer that's super fast doesn't create this same problem. Thanks for your comment!
